How to calculate external pressure for vessel buried in sand ?

When a vessel is buried in sand, it experience’s external pressure due to the weight of the sand

above it. to calculate this pressure, we are use the hydrostatic pressure formula.

External pressure = Density of sand * gravitational acceleration * depth of buried

Firstly, we have find out which type of sand density is used. Many type of sand density 1. loose sand 2. Dry sand 3. packed sand 4.wet sand 5. Wet – packed sand and 6. River sand. Then we are choosing dry sand density.

Dry sand density = 1602 kg/m3

Gravitational Acceleration is denoted by ‘g’ it is approximately 9.81 m/s2.

Depth of burial: – this is the distance of top of sand and bottom of the vessel.

Calculation’s

Given data,

Density of sand =1602 Kg/m3

Gravitational acceleration = 9.81 m/ s2

Depth of buried =1 m., as volume to consider = 1m3

External pressure = density of sand * gravitational acceleration * depth of burial

= 1602*9.81*1

= 15715 Kg load acting on top of vessel

Let us consider external surface area of vessel on which this load is acting say = 1000 m2

External pressure = 15.715 Kg/m2
